Automatic capture of file properties and references in your new vault environment.

Compare Data Migration Systems

Discover the features of each migration service and choose the service package for your specific needs.
  • Data Transition Service (DTS)
  • Data Migration Service (DMS)
The standard-level system is designed to meet the basic needs of customers migrating data from Windows Explorer or SOLIDWORKS Workgroup who desire limited clean-up of their data.
  • Data Source

The Data Transition Service can migrate from a single source either from Windows File Explorer or SOLIDWORKS Workgroup PDM.

  • Project Guidance

This service includes basic project guidance offering project initiation and kick-off meetings, services process review, and communication per TriMech’s discretion.

  • Property Mapping

Up to 15 properties from SOLIDWORKS files or AutoCAD attributes can be mapped to PDM Variables - all existing properties in files will be maintained.

  • File De-duplication

Allows for files identified with the same name or digital fingerprint to be remedied based on options provided by the service.

  • Service Timeline

The Data Transition Service is completed in approximately six weeks allowing the fastest startup time for your vault.

This fully customisable system is designed to meet the more advanced needs of customers migrating data from Windows Explorer, SOLIDWORKS Workgroup, or other data management systems who desire advanced data clean-up to ensure a solid starting point in the SOLIDWORKS PDM system.
  • Data Source

The Data Migration Service can migrate from multiple sources including other existing document management systems.

  • Project Management

Detailed project plan creation, a dedicated Project Management resource, weekly project status update meetings, and reports available.

  • Property Mapping

Property mapping to PDM Variables is not limited. Property names and values can be updated as part of the migration, including optionally updating properties in physical files.

Some non-SOLIDWORKS CAD files can optionally be processed to extract property information.

Property information can also be updated to match values in ERP, MRP, or other systems.

  • Historical File Versions

The full history of a file can be migrated from existing data management systems or can be built from a Windows file structure.

Duplicate File Name and Duplicate File Content3
Single approach can be selected for all files identified in this scenario, either:
  • Files transitioned 'as is' with no cleanup
  • Include one file and rename the remainder
  • Include one file and exclude the remainder

Folder Structure Mapping
Direct mapping of current structure. Directories (Windows Explorer source) or Projects (Workgroup PDM source) can be excluded or renamed6
Full control of file distribution and folder name changes
File Version History Structure
Workgroup PDM only
Full history can be migrated from existing data management systems or can be built from Windows file structure7
Custom Property Mapping
Up to 15 properties from SOLIDWORKS files or DWG/DXF attributes (Windows Explorer source) or Workgroup PDM properties mapped to PDM Variables.
Property mapping to PDM Variables is not limited. Property names and values can be updated as part of the migration, including optionally updating properties in physical files. Property information can be updated to match values in ERP, MRP or other systems.
Revision Mapping
SOLIDWORKS “Revision” property or DWG/DXF attribute (Windows Explorer source) or Workgroup PDM Revision mapped to PDM Revision
Revision information can be extracted from multiple sources including file naming schema or file properties
Workflow Mapping
Files from Windows Explorer mapped to single state. PDM Workgroup Lifecycles mapped one to one to PDM Workflow States.
Rule sets can be used to map files to various states and workflows in the PDM Vault
PDM Category Mapping
One category per file extension
Custom category mapping options

1 A functional group can be one or more business units, with one or more data sources, but which will have identical data conditioning requirements.

2 SOLIDWORKS (sldprt, sldasm, slddrw), dwg and dxf file formats.

3 Files identified as having the same file name and as identical based on the file’s unique digital fingerprint.

4 Files identified as having the same file name as other files included in the migration.

5 Files identified as identical based on the file’s unique digital fingerprint, but that have different file names.

6 Directories can be renamed using a singular replacement ruleset. (Eg: Replace “x” with “y”).

7 Building files history for files from a Windows source requires consistent file naming schema and/or folder structure to indicate historic versions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What types of data can be migrated?

Our scalable and highly customisable approach to Data Migration means that most types of data and data sources can be considered for Migration to PDM.

Commonly migrated data includes SOLIDWORKS and legacy CAD (part and assembly files, drawings) along with BOMs, custom properties, revision data.

Legacy documents from various sources can also be migrated, but intelligence will be limited by the nature of those documents.

How long does a typical migration take?

Timelines vary depending on the volume and complexity of the data, but our migrations follow a phased approach, starting with discovery and planning. These are followed by test migrations, validation, and full deployment.

Including Validation of pilot migrations, a small-to-mid-sized organization can often complete a migration within a month from first pilot.

Will our file references remain intact after migration?

Yes. Preserving file relationships (like parts to assemblies and drawings) is a core part of any professional migration process.

We have developed bespoke tools and scripts to maintain these links and prevent broken references.

Can we migrate our data without interrupting day-to-day work?

In many cases, yes. A staged migration plan allows teams to continue working while data is prepared and pilot migrations carried out in a separate test environment.

Final cutovers are typically scheduled to minimise disruption, with our bespoke Migration tools ensuring that the runtimes are minimal.

What happens to our revision history and file properties during migration?

Dependant on the source (e.g File System or 'other'), PDM History can typically be maintained or created within the Migration process.

Metadata like revisions, approval status, and other custom properties can be preserved and even combined/rationalised or updated from external data sources if needed.

What should we do before starting a data migration project?

Familiarise yourself with the key considerations before undertaking a migration. Our migration services provide a full audit of your existing data, so you can understanding where it’s stored, how it’s structured, and what should be migrated.

Clear goals, user involvement, and expert guidance are key to a successful outcome.
