3D CAD design offers a wide range of benefits over 2D CAD, to name just a few:
- The models are easier to understand, which leads to faster approvals and helps potential customers to get a feel for a design.
- Design changes are simple and updates automatically propagate to your documentation including drawings and BoMs.
- Designs can be taken straight through to manufacturing, whether that's setting tool paths for CAM or programming a 3D printer.
- It's easy to view every component works together before having to manufacture anything. Designs can be validated and optimized using virtual testing.
That said, there are still certain situations where 2D CAD is more efficient and we have customers that make good use of 2D and 3D together.
If you need to migrate some or all of your data into 3D to take advantage of some of the benefits mentioned above then
SOLIDWORKS has tools to make this process simple. In this video we outline some typical conversion processes.
