IMPORTING SHEET METAL PART 2/3

Introduction

Following on from part 1, Jordan will explain the functionality of the Insert Bend tool.

Insert Bends

During my training I completed the sheet metal course which included how to use the insert bends feature. This tool can be used to add in the bends required for a sheet metal part to flatten.

1) Firstly, click the Insert Bends Button located in the Sheet Metals tab on the far right. Note: Any cylindrical faces in the model will be converted to rolled sheet metal bends, the radius of the arc is used as the bend radius automatically by SOLIDWORKS.

2) The next step is to select the face you want as your fixed face. In this example I have selected the bottom face as my fixed face.

3) After this you need to input your required parameters for your bends. It may not allow you to at first, if not select Override default parameters as it will then allow you to set your own parameters for example, the bend radius and the thickness if the thickness has not already been set.

4) You are also given the option to add Rips to your model through the insert bends feature so you don’t have to start a new feature just to add rips.

5) A message will pop up saying that auto relief cuts have been made if the tick box has not been cleared, this is because the rips need a relief cut to allow them to be bent. You can also adjust the shape of the relief cuts and their relief ratio in the boxes shown below.

6) Once confirmed the sharp corners will appear as SharpBend sub-features in the tree as shown in the image below.

7) The model will now be converted to have all sheet metal bends instead of sharp corners and cylindrical faces where required. It will also now show the auto relief cuts and rips on the model.
